DTK4-8y: Math Kit I Diagnostic Tests and Answer Keys
"Where should my child start? Math Kit I or Math Kit II? Will I have to do all the lessons in Math Kit I? Which lessons - or even books - can I safely skip?"
These questions are answered by taking the diagnostic tests for pre-k through 3rd graders.
Many parents who purchased ShillerLearning started with these tests. Their children loved the approach and asked for more, which made the purchase decision risk-free.
Includes 12 tests + 12 prescriptive answer keys.
Included in Math Kit I, Math Kit I Basic, and Math Kit I Digital.
The purchase price is fully refunded when purchasing K01-DL5-0408 or K02-DL5-0912 within 30 days of download. Otherwise, due to the nature of downloadable content, returns are not accepted on digital items.
Why ShillerLearning diagnostic testing?
We do not want to make assumptions about what a student knows or doesn't know, so we recommend that the educator start each student, regardless of age (up to 15 years old), at the first test from Book 1 with the introduction, 'This should be really easy for you. Let's have some fun and see if you can get them all right.' Four tests for each math book (1, 2, and 3) are included in the diagnostic test download.
Check the answer key. If the student answers all the questions correctly, praise and move on to the next test. If a question is answered incorrectly, the answer key is prescriptive: it tells you exactly which lesson(s) will fill the hole identified by this question. You will see the list of lessons that teach the concept for that question right next to the question in parentheses. The best practice is to have the student do those activities before going to the next test (unless you are using the tests to decide between kit levels before purchasing).
Stop testing when the student misses most of the test questions. You have now identified exactly where he or she needs to be in the lesson book - and you have identified and filled all of the holes in his or her math foundation utilizing all four learning styles (visual, tactile, auditory, and kinesthetic).
A portion of your purchase may be tax-deductible as a donation to the Rising Stars Foundation. The Rising Stars Foundation is an IRS-recognized non-profit 501(c)(3); EIN 26-0412156. Share your receipt with your tax professional.
This is used in pre-k or early elementary.

Excellent product! Really helped me to figure out the gaps in my sons math abilities and where to begin. The only cons I found was it was a tad difficult to do parts of the test without the manipulatives and also to find which score blank went with which question.
Hi Angela,
Thank you for your kind words and I'm glad you were able to identify your son's gaps in math.
We have a dilemma with the tests: If we have test questions that do not utilize manipulatives, we are not truly testing. And if we have test questions that do utilize manipulatives, parents may not have the manipulatives before getting the kit.
Fortunately, parents typically find a 'Buddhist middle' that lets them fabricate or use a 2D representation of manipulatives they don't have. It's imperfect but a lot cheaper!
Score blanks (places to fill out the score) always appear with the test question. You probably figured that one out after administering a few tests!
Warm regards,
Larry
This kit is good. It has the forms easy to print and well laid out. There are several errors of questions not answered on the key and also a few answered on the test. Also you need manipulatives to complete which I wasn’t aware of.
I am so pleased with the way this works, the test was easy to use, and it actually tells you which lessons to go back and do, if your child misses a problem. In 10 years of homeschooling I have never seen this, I have always had to search back through the book to find where my kids need to review or fill in gaps. This is great!!!
We order the placement test but with not having knowage of the curriculum it was hard to do the tests.
